Installing Asterisk On Synology Ds211j

Synology makes it super easy to install Plex Media Server on its DiskStation NAS boxes, but missing from the simple user interface is a way to update Plex Media Server if a new version releases. Don’t worry, though—there’s still a way to do it.

UPDATE: Synology has now added the ability to update Plex Media Server right from within Package Center just like any other package, but the below method still works if you ever want to push a manual update.

Some users like to run software programs on there Synology DS which are not available in the package center (Synology repro, or any other). To install software you may need ipkg (or the Itsy Package Management System). Ipkg is not default installed on your Syno so you have to do that yourself. On the Synology wiki there’s an article which describes the process of installing ipkg, but many.

You can set many of Synology’s packages available from the Package Center in DiskStation Manager to be auto-updated if you want them to be. Otherwise, you’re notified when packages are available for updating. The trouble is that Plex Media Server is left out, meaning you have to update it manually. Here’s how to do it.

Start by firing up your Plex server’s user interface, and then click the “Settings” option.

The next screen shows what version of Plex Media Server you’re currently running. If an update is available, it will tell you just to the right of the version number. If there’s an update, click the “please install manually” link to get started.

Give it a few moments to install the update. When it’s complete, the installation window automatically closes and you’re back at your list of installed packages. There, you’ll see that Plex is now running the latest version.

It’s a little cumbersome, and better automation would be nice. But, at least it’s not too difficult a process.
