“All Shook Up” is the way jukebox musicals should be written, and the show’s production by Tri-Valley Repertory Theatre is the way the Joe Dipietro musical should be performed.

This isn’t to say the Livermore/Pleasanton group suddenly cornered the spirits of Ibsen and O’Neill. Nope, they all just strapped on their blue-suede shoes (really), mustered more energy than a platoon of sugar-charged 6-year-olds, and harnessed some remarkable singing talent to turn two-dozen Elvis Presley tunes into a clever and extremely funny parody of just about every teen, don’t-knock-the-rock, musical you’ve ever seen.
You will learn nothing about Elvis in this show. The hip-wiggling, black-haired, leather-clad, motorcycle-riding instigator of this tale is named Chad (Robert Lopez); he’s fresh out of jail and just dropped by a small town to have a case of roadbed wiggles taken out of his motorcycle.
He can’t help it if all the girls and women in town fall for him and all the boys and men want to be just like him. He can’t help it if the town’s uptight Mayor Matilda Hyde (Ali Lane) and her armed lackey, Sheriff Earl (Bob Stratton), want to roll him out of town on a motorbike with bad tires. He can’t help it if the grease-smudged motorcycle mechanic Natalie (Morgan Breedveld) is so smitten with him she disguises herself as a boy, Ed, to get closer to him.
Yep, if you drama majors have been paying attention, there’s a little homage to Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” in there, and without a single “forsooth,” love blossoms all around the small town like the flowers that bloom on hillside weeds in the middle of May.
But, alas, as the Bard might say, Chad is unable to get within nibbling distance of the apple of his eye, Miss Sandra (Katie Pogue), who constantly laments the fact that the town’s citizenry doesn’t know the difference between a Botticelli and a bowl of chili. And worse, they don’t care. And with his leather, grease and blue suede, Chad doesn’t seem much different from the others.
So he’s not doing too well and neither is Natalie, or Chad’s sidekick, Dennis (Mike Verzosa, a small man with a delightfully towering voice).

And Chad’s puzzled because he finds himself having a strange attraction to Ed.
Not surprisingly, as the story moves along, everything gets all shook up, the Mamie Eisenhower moral code championed by the mayor topples, rock ‘n’ roll prevails and romance blossoms everywhere.
Director/choreographer Christina Lazo keeps the show moving roller coaster fast, so necessary for farce, and has created some tremendous dance numbers, including the lavish “Jailhouse Rock” sequence that opens the show.
The dancing, acting and singing are top-notch throughout. At first, Lopez seems to be holding back in some of the rocking Elvis numbers, but he quickly finds the full-tilt Presley button and speeds into an excellent performance.
Breedveld also has an excellent voice and is simply charming in both her roles. Veteran comic performer Jeff Seaberg, who should be a familiar face to most local theatergoers, is rock-solid and highly entertaining in his role as Natalie’s father. Elizabeth Jones beautifully plays and sings the role of Sylvia, owner of the local diner. Christina Eskridge plays her daughter, Lorraine, who becomes a surprise love interest and a delight to watch.
