Steyr Hahn Serial Numbers

LSB#: 180502PT32
Make: Steyr
Model: Steyr-Hahn 1911 made for the 1912 Chilean Contract
Serial Number: 1310A
Year of Manufacture: 1912
Caliber: 9x23mm Steyr (This pistol has NOT been re-chambered to 9mm Parabellum, and a 9mm Para. round will not chamber.)
Action Type: Single Action Semi-Auto Pistol with Internal Magazine Loaded Via Stripper Clips
Markings: The left side of the trigger guard and slide are marked “7605o”. The left side of the slide is also marked with the Chilean crest (with deer on left side and condor on right, with a shield with star in the center), “STEYR 1912”, “MOD.1911”, “S” and with a small shield. The left side of the hammer and the rear of the extractor are marked with crossed hammers, the left side of the safety with a tiny cross above a circle, the left side of the cartridge stop button with a “S”, and the left side of the frame above the grip with a small shield. The right side of the slide is marked “EJERCITO DE CHILE”. The right rear of the slide and frame are both marked with a small five-pointed start. The rectangular floorplate behind the lanyard ring is marked “1310”. The lug on the bottom rear of the bolt is marked with a circled “K”, “1310” and a circled mark we can’t make out.
Barrel Length: 5 1/8”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade fixed to the barrel (A characteristic of the Model 1911) that has an inverted “V” shape when viewed from the rear. The rear sight is a “V” groove at the top of the raised ears used as a cocking piece at the back of the slide.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are checkered walnut that are dark with oil staining. The checkering shows moderate to heavy wear with a few marks and a large deep bruise in the right grip. There are several dings and handling marks and a few surface chips in the smooth edges of the grips and tool marks around the grip screw. The grips are tight on the frame. The grips rate in about Very Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: The finish is blued. The hammer, safety, trigger, extractor and the hammer screw are “In The White”.
Finish Originality: The finish is original.
Bore Condition: The bore is gray with moderate wear in the rifling. There is light erosion scattered throughout the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 70% of its metal finish. There are tiny spots of pinprick surface erosion scattered over the slide, frame, and the top of the backstrap, with larger spots of erosion on the trigger guard and the underside of the frame around the trigger guard. There is finish loss on the edges of the slide and frame, and thinning in the backstrap, front strap, trigger guard and in spots on the slide and frame. There is a sharp ding in the left rear of the slide, and two more in the underside of the frame, with two tiny dings in the left side of the frame and a few light handling marks scattered over the remaining surfaces. The slide, hammer and slide/barrel wedge serrations show light wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear, with a very clear crest on the slide. Overall, this handgun rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. This is a very unique looking pistol with ears on the top of the slide for loading the internal magazine with stripper clips and ears on the rear of the slide that aid in pulling the slide back. The slide is tight to the frame. There is a “D” shaped lanyard ring at the butt. The trigger is a little stiff, but breaks crisply. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: See http://randyrick.us/AustrianFirearms/pm1912.htm for more information on this pistol than we can provide here. This is a Steyr-Hahn M1911 pistol (differing from the M12 in that it has a fixed front sight). Hahn is German for hammer. The M12 was evaluated for military use, but was not adapted by the Austrian Army until the First World War began, and was only produced to about 1919. The pistol was made for several different countries and there was even a machine pistol variant produced as the Model 1916. Chile was the first country to contract for the pistol in 1911, and ordered 5000, chambered in 9mm Steyr. This pistol is from that contract, and is correctly marked with the Chilean crest on the left side of the slide and the Army marking “EJERCITO DE CHILE” on the right side. The barrel, slide, frame and magazine floorplate have matching serial numbers. The pistol is in about Very Good condition with about 70% of its original finish remaining. Having been one of only 5000 made, and with an original finish and matching numbers, this pistol is sure to catch the eye of the German, Austrian and Chilean gun collectors.
